After a lengthy, difficult analog project for a client, I've been doubling down on learning to work digitally. I love the feel of working with live materials on paper, but for certain projects I need to be able to update and change elements on the fly. I've been pleased so far to find that, with some tricks, it isn't too hard to imbue digital art with a tactile look.

If you like this one, it's available for sale on Society6 as a high-quality print and a snazzy looking mug.

This one was a commission for a friend ("An extremely conservative emu village"). It was fun to try to think of visual signifiers of conservatism that could I could apply to emus and that wouldn't read as too "of the moment". I settled on Puritans.

After some googling, I chose this image from a 1953 article in Landscape: Magazine of Human Geography as my inspiration:

The illustration isn't meant to be of a Puritan village, but it looked ripe to be filled with stern, morally inflexible birds.

In other news, I finally opened a storefront at Society6! Right now I have some prints available, and some other products and designs in the works. And if you're interested in original artwork, there's a Store link at the top of this page.David Mansfieldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18054465297897727652noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3073382387753486369.post-76847221881720443092014-08-24T10:32:00.001-07:002014-08-24T10:32:23.208-07:00Empathy

News! New (published) illustrations!

"'Great' Alternatives to Paid Sick Days", My first illustration project for Moms Rising, is live! Here's my favorite one:

You can see the rest on the Buzzfeed community page they made for the series. Moms Rising is an awesome nonprofit doing important work, and I'm honored to have been involved in their efforts. The series was also featured on Fast Company, and I'm still trying to get my jaw off the floor.

Earlier this month I also illustrated a humor piece by Molly Taft at the Bygone Bureau. The article is called "My Family Eats Paleo: An Activity Book for Kids". Go see! I really enjoyed taking a step away from my usual style and trying to imitate the look of a coloring book. Molly: If you want to make this an actual activity book, we should talk.

Finally, I have set up an online portfolio. Check it out, and commission my services, at cargocollective.com/davidmansfield.

It is hard work, moving all that weight around -
Rolling that fat eye from one side to the other
burns enough energy for you to jump ten feet.
And oh, how all that size makes it
so
very
easy
to lie down.

Up on the housetop, reindeer pause / Out jumps good old Santa Claus / Oh god why did he jump onto the roof / Our house is ruined

I could try to explain why I drew a picture of Humpback Whale Santa Claus in August, but I actually don't remember what led to it. I only know that once this image occurred to me, I had to get it down.David Mansfieldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18054465297897727652noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3073382387753486369.post-16737805608108783242013-08-02T19:01:00.001-07:002013-08-02T19:01:33.792-07:00Jam

Much like the rest of the internet right now, I see giant monsters every time I close my eyes. This one isn't from any particular movie, though I admit it does bear a general resemblance to the creatures in Pacific Rim.

Speaking of which, are you Guillermo del Toro? If you are, here is my idea for Pacific Rim 2:

More giant monsters fighting people inside giant robots, but also more than one female character who talks. And fewer dudes fighting over a woman's honor. And fewer women almost accidentally killing everyone because they can't control their emotions. I liked your movie, but come on.David Mansfieldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18054465297897727652noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3073382387753486369.post-19539263111618735172013-07-19T20:00:00.001-07:002013-07-19T20:00:14.514-07:00Mail Ghost

Here's a little doodle from this morning. It is inspired by the work of the estimable Scott C., who has recently become one of my favorite artists. I bought his book, Amazing Everything, a few months ago and can't stop looking at it.

I'm still working on the greeting cards, as well as two other, larger projects. I'm hoping to get back to more little things like this farmer and three of his chickens.David Mansfieldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18054465297897727652noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3073382387753486369.post-7338454190928039252013-05-09T14:12:00.001-07:002013-05-09T14:12:03.039-07:00A is for Effort CardsHello! It has been some time. One of the downsides of quitting my job at the toy store is a sad lack of exposure to kids and parents saying funny things. I still have a few written down somewhere, though, so the toy store doodles may not be completely dead yet.

I've been playing around with what my next project should be, and I am pleased to be ready to announce it. I've been working on a line of greeting cards, and just launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise money for the printing costs.

You can find out more about the project via the above link. Please support and share! My funding goal is a lot higher than it was for Twleve Experiments, but I think that with enough word-of-mouth, I can make it.

I'll post more here as it becomes available. Life has been a bit hard to keep its cage these last couple of months. Big changes are ahead.David Mansfieldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18054465297897727652noreply@blogger.com
